TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION REFUSES TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ON ITS "NO FLY LISTS"

The staff at noflylist.com have attempted to obtain information from the Transportation Security Administration relating to the "no fly" and "selectee" airline lists. As the public is aware, over 20,000,000 people are named on the secret lists including peace activists and political opponents of the Attorney General.

After almost a year, by letter dated March 4, 2004, Patricia Riep-Dice, Associate Director for Freedom of Information for the TSA, responded to our Freedom of Information Request. She wrote, "to ensure aviation security, TSA does not disclose the names and identifying information of information on TSA's  watch lists. The watch lists are appended to and a part of Security Directives and Emergency Amendments issued to air carriers, and constitute sensitive security information (SSI)."

Ms. Riep-Dice also refused to provide any information about how the lists are compiled or how a person may remove themselves from the list. She wrote, "All 51 documents are being withheld in full. Security Directives and Emergency Amendments issued to air carriers, constitute sensitive security information under governing regulations...Similarly, any draft, proposed or recommended change to these Directives and Amendments, including the appended watch lists are SSI under the governing regulation."

As to other agency watch lists, Ms. Riep-Dice claimed that records they located "have been forwarded to the originated agency" for a direct response. However, she refused to identify the agencies involved.

Noflylist.com and its staffers are presently suing the TSA to obtain information and will keep the public updated.

The public should be aware that these lists are not "terrorist watch lists" as the government claims, but, are meant to track and harass citizens of the United States for non-violent activities. Very few of the persons listed on watch lists have any affiliation with terrorism. If the lists were true "terrorist watch lists," noflylist.com would have no concerns.
